The Wall of Won't

I just have to VENT. In public.

I'm trying to deal with a Wall of Won't. Wall pretends to be a Wall of Can't but it is not. Wall is a master manipulator that uses flattery, feigned co-operation, 'promises', delay, emotional blow-ups, distance, unreachability, lies and massive amounts of excuses and obfuscation to serve its own selfish interests. Wall manages to get things done only when the outcome is something WALL wants to happen (benefiting Wall). Otherwise, it's as dense and inpenetrable as a system of underground bunkers and tunnels. Wall will drive you into fits of rage and then act all hurt like it was Wall that has just been attacked so innocently.

Unfortunatly I cannot just give Wall the finger and get Wall out of my life for good (at least in this role). That is what I would do to a person who treated me this way and who was such a fucking drain on my spirit, attitude and energy over and over and over and over again. Wall sits (literally, in a way) on assets that belong to me and another person. The assets are large enough to mean something significant to our lives, but not large enough to be out of jeopardy of being consumed by legal fees if things have to go to court. Yet I am sooooooo close to taking that step over the most recent issue (not described here) and the sum total of the aggrivation dealing with Wall has produced in me over the years.

Here are some examples on minor things that shows what dealing with Wall is like:

Problem - Wall works hours that makes it hard for Wall to be in contact with people like attorneys and accountants.

Proposed Solution - get a pay-as-you-go cell phone and call from work during lunch and breaks - receive their calls into voice mail.

How it Goes:
Wall - what one should I get?
Me - get any one, just make sure it has a voice mailbox and one where you can program in the phone numbers
Wall - I want to know the best deals, can you research that for me
Me - get T-Mobile, I already researched it, that's why that is what I got for myself
Wall - but I've heard that Cingular has some deals out now
Me - then get Cingular
Wall - could you research it for me
Me - no. It's not worth my time; even if there was a price difference, they're all competitive so the difference will be exremely small. It isn't worth either of our time. You need a cell phone NOW. Just go to the Mall and get one.

We had versions of this conversation for a good YEAR before Wall got a cell phone. Then, within a month Wall lost it. (Then found it; but that was still such a frustrating hassle.)

Problem - Financial statements are not being prepared according to requirements.

Solution - Manage the information on a Works spreadsheet. (I offer to walk her through the set-up.)

How it goes:
Wall - I can't
Me - why not?
Wall - my computer keeps crashing or freezing up when I try to do stuff
Me - (lots of time over the phone having her check things out) - Your hard drive is too full and your system might need to see a computer doctor due to corruption in the Op Sys. You should delete all music from your HD and then get it to the computer doctor.
Wall - but there are financial papers on the computer
Me - then we'll burn them into a disk for storage
Wall - I can't get the disk burning software to burn - keeps locking up
Me - (after more evaluation) - buy an external HD and we'll transfer it
Wall - research it for me
Me - get the one I've got so I will be able to help you better
Wall - (after months of delay) gets a different vendor's HD
(months of delay before Wall gets time to have me walk Wall through the set-up; turns out Wall bought a backup drive, not a storage drive and it wasn't what was needed or even useful).
[Months pass and we go through the above over and over in a loop where Wall tells me to send the link for the HD so Wall can order it, I e-mail the link, nothing happens. Finally Wall does order and receive the HD]
Wall - I want to get that HD set up with you soon.
Me - anytime; it should only take a few minutes and then another few minutes to train you to drag files to the drive for storage. It's VERY SIMPLE.
Wall - well I can't do it this weekend ... maybe next weekend we could take some time.
Me - that would be fine, call anytime.

Current status - Wall has had the proper HD for about a year and it is still in its box. We have had this last 'loop' of a conversation about getting time together to set up the HD about 8 - 10 times since then, all with the same frustrating outcome, no action.

These are just examples of how relatively inconsequential issues go between us. In the meantime Wall blames Wall's lack of progress on not being able to get into contact with people and not being able to use the computer to manage the financial elements.

Stick a fork in me, my patience is DONE.

Unnatural

I know New England gets a 'winter thaw' every year in January, but this is pretty rediculous, and more than a little scary:

January 6, 2007

We're all wearing short sleeves today and every window is open.

Yay! Routine!

Last night I packed up my Christmas decorations for another year.

The holiday season was very short for me due to the Vegas trip sandwiched in between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Also, I had to throw out my artificial tree and a decorative garland because they harbored asthma-inducing mold. Therefore, my decorating this year was pretty minimal. Making the 6 batches of cookies and the bread was the Christmas event that made the season special.

New Year's Eve was exceptionally quiet - a few phone calls and only one peep visiting Chat. I wanted to make it a DVD night, but I've been having problems getting my DVD units (two tried!) to work with my Digital Cable box.

All my TVs are the old style with the singular cable IN / OUT connections and it is just becoming inadequate and frustrating. One of the units used to work just fine, but now I can't get it set up. Did the Cable people do something this Fall to make the unit obsolete with a Box, or have I set it up wrong? The manuals are Greek and I don't have to patience to struggle with it right now.

I ended up watching some concert DVDs on my laptop just to claim a partial victory over the problem.

I'd love to get a Flat Panel LED HD-ready TV with all the connections one could want, but I'm not ready to take on the expense. I'm hoping while I dither the prices will drop another $300 or so.

So, anyway, I'm ready to get back into a normal routine. Tonight I weigh in for the first time in nearly 2 months at Weight Watchers. I can tell that the weight gain will be around 10 pounds; I feel crappy from too much of all the wrong foods. It is time to repent and regain the control that I let fly out the window around Thanksgiving.

I actually did 15 minutes on my Gazelle clothing rack yesterday and my body liked it!

A large portion of my year-end financial wrap-up is complete; the remainder I'll be able to finish as the last December statements come in. Otherwise, I am slowly getting back into my Memorabila Scanning Project after a 7-week hiatus.

Routine, boring routine, how I've missed you!

ETA: I haven't fogotten about posting Vegas pictures and a little about the trip; the photos have been selected and uploaded. I just need some Time!

  2. Exercise patience
  3. Exercise listening
  4. Exercise a helping hand
  5. Exercise restraint to obtain higher goals
  6. Exercise smiles and good attitudes,  and ...
  7. Exercise

If these fail, here is my default list circulated via email:

  1. Excersie Less.
  2. Watch more TV.
  3. Eat less cloned meat.
  4. Procrastinate more.
  5. Buy fewer music CDs.
  6. Swipe more MP3 files from friends.
  7. Spend vacations in Cyberspace.
  8. Read less.
  9. Don't believe politicians.
  10. Complain more.
  11. Get further in debt. ...AND the resolution that I can keep with ease...
  12. Gain weight (at least 15 pounds!)

Year-End Feast

It's been a while since I dined at the Friday's Feast table because I've been toooo scattered to remember, but here is a year-end entry as I "resolve" to participate more in 2007"

Feast One Hundred & Twenty Four

Appetizer
How do you usually celebrate on New Year's Eve?

I stay at home and have tasty appetizers and drinks all day and evening. I make my resolutions list, make phone calls, play on the computer, dabble in my projects, read, watch TV or DVDs, and check into Chat and spend time with any online friends.

Soup
Name one thing unexpected that happened to you in 2006.
I have two:
My best friends from my college days, and whom I have not seen in 18 years, invited me to join them in Las Vegas, and I did, and loved it!
I got a nice raise after nearly a 7-year wait. (Company is coming out of troubled times.)

Salad
Where was your favorite place that you visited in 2006?
Quark's Bar in The Star Trek Experience in the Las Vegas Hilton with my two friends and one 'surly' Klingon.

Main Course
What resolution is your top priority for 2007?
To be a better person. That sort of encompasses about 100 other resolutions I make.

Dessert
Using just three words, describe 2006.
Healthier
Friendlier
Improving

A New Classic

First of all, I am shamelessly stealing this link from Donna's blog, Gryn and Bare It. Think of it as "re-gifting."

O Holy Night

I LOVE how this guy COMMITS to the song, no matter WHAT. It had me with tears in my eyes.

This is going on my music player. Now all I need to do is get that leg lamp and find the Yule Log channel and I'm all set for Christmas.

Baked!

Stick a fork in me, I think I'm done.

That's nut bread in the foil wraps and 5 different cookie recipes. I actually have pecan balls to do, but that's not going to happen today. Now I just have to pull together cookies with their gift tins.

I also have to do my Christmas cards today.

And decorate.

And watch the Survivor finale.

Tomorrow I stand in line at the Post Office.

'Tis the season, and all that.

Half-Baked

I don't know how I get myself into things like this.

The idea was to make some nice holiday cookies to show the people I work with that I really don't hate them.  (After all, it is the season of caring and sharing, right?)

I decided to make a bread that my grandmother used to make involving nuts. That meant that I needed to email my Aunt for the recipe. Since she is a very nice, kind, and indulgent Aunt, she spent several DAYS searching for the recipe and consulting with her knowledgable baking friends about the preparation so I would have everything I needed.

I also wanted to make a selection of my favorite cookies, some I've never made, ever. The others I've made a few times over the past decades. I guess I got nostalgic.

So, I bought all the ingredients: flour, whole wheat flour, confectioner's sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, Vanilla Extract, Almond Extract, Cream of Tartar (? whatever THAT is), Karo syrup, Hershey's Kisses, Toll House Morsels, Peanut Butter, walnuts (lots of walnuts), pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, milk, butter, eggs, and red and green sugar sprinkles.

It only took about 3 inefficient trips to the grocery store this week to finally assemble all the ingredients. I thought I was ready to be a baking fool.

Then I discovered I was just a fool.

Sure, I had all the ingredients, but I was missing a good portion of the necessary baking appliances:

Well, by the time I discovered this I was pretty significantly invested in this baking project. Therefore, in two additional shopping trips I forked over the extra cash for the equipment. I'm not sure if the coffee grinder will be a good nut and seed grinder so we're still skating on thin ice here. And then there is the whole thing about cooking with yeast that has me verrrrry unsure of myself....

If I don't show up in Chat Sunday night for the Survivor finale, someone send a rescue party.
