All Clear!

Whatever posessed me these past three days has moved on so I'm my old self again. Thank God! Just in time for the weekend. Yay!

Somehow I managed to get my taxes done and filed so I don't have that hanging over my head this weekend. Now I just need to resist the temptation to go on an unauthorized buying spree with the money that's coming back. I do have an list, authorized my my inner adult:

  • TIME and TV Guide renewals
  • Renter's Insurance-annual
  • Norton Internet Security - annual, 2 computers
  • annual auto property tax
  • charities and other giving
  • clothing for the new me
  • Weight Watcher's Season Pass

This will consume the refunds with a little more coming out of my pocket. The child in me will just have to wait for a little allotment from a recent Trust disbursement, but that money is overwelmingly earmarked for debt reduction and emergency funds.

Hush, inner child!

Today? Annoy Lifey

::SCOWL::

I've been in a pissy mood all day.

1.  Flood. The men's room located right outside my office had a flooding urinal sometime overnight. Someone stopped the flooding but apparently did not inform the management. The flood soaked the hall carpting so much that water was pooled on top. I had to call the management and insist that they wet-vac it up. All day today, even after they vac'ed it was *squish* *squish* *squish* and that will continue all week.

2.  Space Heater. Same management has asked us FOUR times, the lastest through our president, if the shop has one of their space heaters. Four times our response has been NO.  Write off the $30 heater (if there ever was one) already!Stop harrassing us.

3.  Sullen teller. Bank teller with a bad attitude when I asked a simple question about their CDs. Excuuuuuuuse me!

4.  Lazy co-workers. Can't lift a little finger to pitch in and maybe phone in an office supplies order. Two of you are so under-worked that you can gossip and be on the phone all day. When you're out for days at a time it doesn't even cause a ripple in the working of the office. Make the person who's constantly swamped do it. I hope I ordered your favorite pens. HATE!

5.  Incompetent customer service. So, I order supplies and stick some cartons of copy paper on the order. I ask for the total...$700! Woman had a case of paper at $118. I told her that we get it for around $25 and we always order the same brand. I had to call our sales rep to get it straightened out. Nobody pays $118 a case.

6.  Fumes! .....*scrape* *scrape* *scrape*.....*cough* *cough* *cough*  Landlord and his worker were stripping the paint off my apartment door with a strong solvent. From their progress it is apparent he began the job at the end of the day. The fumes are so bad I have a window and the back door open and I can't be in my computer room or living room. Thanks to my wifi I'm able to be online, chat, and watch American Idol and The Amazing Race from my bedroom. But, I'm not happy. Grrrrrrr.

My formerly friendly relationship with my landlord has been strained of late due to a $100 rent increase and his efforts to sell the building. He kept several apartments empty this past several months to have them open for showing. I feel that the rent increase is paying for those empty apartments. The door-stripping project is the direct result of a comment by a potential buyer. Make it nice for them, ok? Like I said. Strained.

It's all PETTY, PETTY, PETTY, and probably a little hormonal. It feels good to vent.

Thank you for your eye-roll.

Culprits!

SLOW LOADS

Life Off Hold has been loading verrrrrry slowly for a few weeks. Life-the-detective tracked down the culprit. The site that crunched my COUNTDOWN numbers has been MIA and causing the delays. Dead apps at bad links can do that. Sorry.

SLOW TO DO LIST

Lifeonhold is currently procrastinating the following:

  1. Taxes - even though I should get hundreds back
  2. Medical Retirement Account reimbursement - more money back.

The reason? Paperwork! The Culprit identified! Time ticks away towards the deadlines. In the meantime I do other 'dreaded tasks' like catching up on magazines, and even the Gazelle!

WEIGHT. LOSS? [no]

Two weeks ago I did the Weight Watcher's plan to the T and gained 2 pounds. Waaaaaa? I was dejected and so this week has been a total blow-out.

Home-made shrimp rolls and seafood salad rolls on my new platters. The seafood salad-avacado-cucumber filling is a real winner.

The culprit? Me. Sadly. Wednesday starts a new week.

STIFF NECK

Neck has been killing me for the past 2 weeks. It seems that it's part of the same muscular-skeletal problems that give me the intermittant eye, headache, and body aches, and TMJ. TMJ may be the culprit, or something else. Friday afternoon I signed myself up for a 1/2 day vacation, had an ear coning and then cruised the local mall. At the mall I tried a 'water massage'; after forking over $15 for 10 minutes I climbed fully clothed into a machine shaped sort of like a tanning bed with my head outside but the rest of me enclosed. Jets of high pressure water moved up and down my back and neck giving me a massage. A plastic barrier kept me from getting wet. I emerged a bit sore for a day or two, but the pressure of the water beating  on my neck seemed to do the trick and today was the first in about 2 weeks that my neck feels normal.

Under Wraps

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

The Worst?  Honey is terrified of being picked up. She salivates with fear and then becomes jumpy every time I approach. I guess her few experiences with it involved cages. I don't know if I'll ever get her to the vet at this rate.

The Best?  Otherwise life is goood! She 'helps me' make the bed in the morning because she knows after that the window to her 'birdie TV' will be opened for the day. Lately I've been partially covering her with the comforter as I make the bed and she hasn't been running away from it. She sorta likes it, but doesn't want to be all suck-up grateful or anything. This morning I got a picture:

Friday's Feast #84

Friday's Feast

Feast Eighty-Four

Appetizer
On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest, how intuitive do you think you are?
At times I'm very intuitive, but never when picking lottery numbers or playing Survivor Fantasy. Perhaps I'm just clued in on the doom and gloom vibe. Hmmmm ....here comes another rent increase!  Yup!  Oh joy!

Soup
What is your favorite kind of gum?
I very rarely chew gum, but when I do it's Denyene Ice Wintergreen.

Salad
Name a CD you own that you would never get rid of.
There are too many to choose just one. I'd say my current lifeboat would be weighed down with Franz Ferdinand (1st album), Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds [currently, Henry's Dream], Radiohead, and Coldplay selections.

Main Course
When was the last time you said something you didn't mean?
As an expressive person my adjectives tend to get out of hand a bit. I really don't live in a cartoonish world, but precision can be boring.

Dessert
What is the sum of the numbers in your birthdate?
30 ... what this means? I don't know.

Friday's Feast # 83

Friday's Feast - Feast 83

It has been quite some time since I dined at this table. Guess I wandered off (see Soup)

Appetizer
How many pillows and blankets do you sleep with?
One pillow, sheet, quilt, and comforter (as needed). I don't like blankets.

Soup
What are you currently "addicted" to?
Sushi & martinis (together), AOL Texas Hold'Em Online Poker, Freecell Solitaire, Qwyzzle (L34 progress). There are worse things that I can't even begin to enjoy because I'd have no control. The most addictive being tortilla chips and shopping.

Salad
If you could make a small change to your current routine or schedule that would make you just a little bit happier, what would it be?
I have a blessedly easy schedule. However I'm a night owl and often push the bedtime envelope only to regret it the next morning. The adult in me (hopefully there is one) needs to demand that I get to bed a little earlier so it doesn't take until an hour into the work day before the fog lifts.

Main Course
Which adjective do you find yourself using often?
%%^^ *^%@, ...... as in "%%^^ *^%@ driver!"

Dessert
Have you ever picked up a hitchhiker?
A few times many years ago. The only memorable one happened one day when I was heading into my job on 2nd shift. My left foot was in a cast from a fall I'd taken down my basement steps a few days earlier so I was in no shape to run from a potential assailant. I saw a young man up ahead on the Interstate and in an instant, virtually without thinking, I found myself swerving over to pick him up. He was out of work and hitchhiking back to Maine. I bought him a sandwich and drove him to the next Interstate on his route. I always think that an angel must have called me to that little service that day.

Break Out The Hair Shirts

Ah, Lent again.

You know, I actually enjoy Lent. Not because I'm very good at it, but because I recognize that when I give it a little effort it is very satisfying to the soul and spirit. God knows, I need a little break from non-stop ego and me-me-me that begs to be indulged all the time. Back!, raging self-beast!

So, LifeOffHold is 'going Lent' in it's banner as a reminder to me and Lifeonhold is going to quietly off-line practice it's themes. I still have my 2006 Resolutions list and think the following fit right in with God's words to 'rend your heart, not your garments and return to Me':

3.  Turn away from the anger response. I've been very self-indulgent these past few years and don't like how I get, mainly internally. I am going to try to tell myself that I'm not going to go there when the temptation strikes. Being overworked and stress or worried is no excuse. I am telling myself that this is not productive and instead I need to do the 'next best thing.'

4.  Complain less and be nicer. One person who hears it all from me will know if I'm working on this or not. I've lost a lot of sleep being worried about things and also fighting battles in my mind. [See also, #3]

8.  Make the spiritual connections. It is spiritual well-being that will help me with all the material struggles and to be a better person. Sometimes the spiritual connection seems to get pushed aside by the cares and desires of this world. When that happens everything seems to go (at least) slightly sour. I attend Mass weekly and pray daily, but it is not always quality. Also, this multi-tasking that I do constantly does not allow my mind to APPRECIATE the moment, which can be spiritual. This connection is not only with God, but the connection with other people. I want to practice more quiet time and to multi-task less so that I can be more present to the spiritual presence.

9.  Go out of my way to be helpful with a good spirit. This can always use some improvement. When I get grumbly, a LOT of improvement.

LifeOffHold is still the place where I let off a little steam and sarcasm that develops through encounters with the human race (and myself) so it's not going to get all peaches and roses here during this special season. Maybe fewer Death Stares.

Torino 2006

The 2006 Winter Olympics are over, and I'm feeling the same emotions as at the end of a season of Big Brother, but without the hate.
That would break down to 2 parts relief that the marathon has ended and 1 part withdrawl. But not really. I still have a stack of tapes to view for the 80% I missed during the nightly broadcasts. I've found that watching the tapes goes well with sessions on the Gazelle, so I have inspirational viewing material for my next 300 sessions.

Winter Olympics thoughts and impressions:

1.  My favorite event - the Men's Biathalon. This was a surprise since I'd never watched that event before. The winter scenery was beautiful as was the lean men in tight ski outfits. Throw in guns and it's the perfect package.

2.  Greatest Life Lesson - came to the woman who was in the lead in the snowboard cross until she made a hotdog showoff move and fell allowing a fellow racer to take the gold. Don't show off until you've crossed the finish line.

3.  Biggest Olympic and Commercial Blowhard - Bode Miller. The fat, not fit, break all rules guy. His Nike commercials were painful in light of his arrogant 'superstar' non-performance.

4. Wonderfully Exciting - all things snowboard. Loved the cross and halfpipe. These will join my usual favorites of ski jumps and downhill and ice skating and the new favorite, the biathalon.

5.  Most Disappointing - the mens and woman's ice skating. Nothing new here. I did like the pairs and dance contests, though.

Well, it's a wrap. Now back to the Gazelle.

ETA: I just realized that I missed an opportunity to create a Winter Olympics Torino 2006 banner edition. That would have been cool.  Back to sushi.

Admin at Work

I have this President's Day off and it has turned into a computer admin day for me. I've cleaned out my e-mail down to the single digits and tucked away all my recent bookmarks into their appropriate folders on both my desktop and laptop computer. In this spirit, I am inspired to sing the praises of my favorite online organizer, so here's the spiel:

So many blogs, so little time. Is this you? Or has the whole blog thing gotten old, always clicking on links only to see nothing but stale entries (a la recent Life Off Hold)?

I would like to once again recommend a very useful management tool. It's free and simple and works for more than just blog listings, but also for your favorite web sites such as the daily Dilbert comic strip or Sudoko puzzle.

Just register for a free page and then list your favorite blog links in the My Feeds section. Then visit your bloglines page at your convienience; updated sites will be in bold along with the number of new entries. Click on the link and read the entries right within bloglines or go to the site by clicking on it's banner for full content such as sidebars and graphics. It's very easy to use, saves time, and provides organization.

I also have this tip for listing your blogs of interest:

Open up an e-mail and keep it open while you visit each of your favorite blogs; copy and paste the blog address into your e-mail; when you have all your blog addresses listed in your e-mail you will have all the addresses at hand for setting them up on bloglines. When done, e-mail it to yourself and file it as a backup reference.

To get you started, LIST ME!
